What You Need to Know: Generations Are Better Together

After attending a leadership conference, I added some interesting information about Millennials to my trainings. Each generation brings a new twist for how to live and work. It’s based on their perspective of previous generations failures and how to make improvements.

This year I fell causing a cyst to appear under my knee cap and a torn tendon in my foot. I’ve never felt old until I went to two young doctors who quickly dismissed my pain each expressing their belief; I am old and should expect pain. They did not understand how their unwillingness to treat me restricted my playtime with my grandchildren.

Fortunately, I found another young doctor who treated my injuries while expressing her dismay over her colleague’s remarks. I could have blamed it on the Millennials, yet it was a member of this generation who treated me. As Jason Dorsey, The Center For Generational Kinetics has verified, generations are not boxes were people respond the same.

This Sunday morning, words started coming to my mind so fast I wrote them down. I am not a poet, yet these words spoke to me on how to work better together. We need to show we care about each other and understand it is every generations responsibility to make changes.

Below are the words I wrote. I hope they speak to you too.

Warmly,
Jean

Generations Are Better Together

I did not use calculators in school.
That does not mean I am a dinosaur.

I do not own the latest phone.
That does not mean I have no use.

I still wear a watch on my wrist.
That does not mean I cannot learn.

I lived through hard times and wars.
That does not mean I do not understand.

I can no longer run fast and jump high.
That does not mean I cannot help you.

I am slower learning new technology.
That does not mean I cannot teach you.

I still have value I will share with you.
That does not mean you cannot change it.

I can listen and learn from you.
That does not mean you cannot share it.

I raised my children with different values.
That does not mean you will do the same.

I worked the same place for a lifetime.
That does not mean it is right for you.

I know I made mistakes. You will too.
That does not mean we cannot grow.

I know we see things from different views.
That does not mean I do not care about you.
